Our middle school program thrives on authentic, experiential learning, aligning with Maria Montessori’s vision for adolescent development. One of the hallmarks of our approach is the ongoing collaboration with Theo’s Market Gardens in Littleton, MA. This partnership allows students to immerse themselves in meaningful, hands-on work that fosters independence, responsibility, and a deep connection to the natural world. At Theo’s, students engage in agricultural activities and service-learning projects that reflect Montessori’s belief in the transformative power of real-world experiences during adolescence.
Maria Montessori emphasized that “the land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the Earth.” This ethos is at the heart of our students’ work at Theo’s Market, where they gain practical skills while contributing to their community.
A Redesigned Vision for Middle School
Under the leadership of veteran educators Lee Waterhouse and Mary Morse, our middle school program is evolving to meet the needs of 21st-century learners. This redesign includes the integration of research-based practices to support brain development, as well as the addition of a school van, which has expanded opportunities for off-campus experiences. Whether visiting Theo’s Market or participating in other service projects, students develop critical thinking, collaboration, and leadership skills. Maria Montessori wrote of the hard work teenagers do as the “Valorization” of their personality – the outcome achieved when students partake in hard work, and feel success in their efforts.
Our commitment to service learning and experiential education ensures that students leave Oak Meadow not just academically prepared but also with the empathy, resilience, and skills to make a meaningful impact on the world.
